How to Copy a YouTube Transcript Without Timestamps

When copying video captions, timestamps like 01:23 break up every single sentence. Here is how to copy clean, continuous paragraphs using either YouTube's native interface or Summavio's instant formatter.

Why Do YouTube Transcripts Include Timestamps?

YouTube creates captions to synchronize spoken words with video frames for accessibility. Because of this, captions are chopped into 2-to-4-second fragments, each anchored to a specific timecode.

While essential for video synchronization, these timestamps make copied text virtually unreadable. Pasting a native transcript into Google Docs or Microsoft Word results in hundreds of fragmented lines filled with numbers and bracketed noise tags like [Music] or [Applause].

Method 1: Native YouTube Method (Desktop Only)

If you are on a computer using a desktop web browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge), YouTube actually includes a hidden toggle to turn off timestamps:

  1. Open the video on YouTube.
  2. In the video description box below the title, click "...More" to expand details.
  3. Scroll down and click the "Show transcript" button. This opens a transcript panel on the right side of the video player.
  4. At the very top of the transcript box, locate the three vertical dots (⋮) menu.
  5. Click "Toggle timestamps". The timecodes will disappear.
  6. Highlight the remaining text from top to bottom and press Ctrl+C (or Cmd+C on Mac).
Limitation of Method 1: Even though the timestamps are hidden, the text remains broken across hundreds of short, jagged lines with random carriage returns. It also leaves behind audio noise tags like [Music].
